  • Ireland Just Hit 3 GW of Solar. But Most Buildings Still Have a Problem No One Talks About.
    Sep 02, 2026
Ireland has reached 3 GW of solar capacity, but many buildings still have unused space for solar power generation. Ireland's solar market has reached another important milestone. According to Solar Ireland, Ireland has now installed more than 3 GW of solar capacity. Solar power is growing across large-scale projects, homes, farms and businesses. More than 200,000 homes in Ireland now have solar panels on their roofs. Businesses are also generating more of their own electricity. The message is clear: solar is becoming a bigger part of Ireland's energy system.   But there is another question for building owners, architects and developers: Have you used all the available space on your building for solar? For many projects, the answer is no.   And this is where SpolarPV takes a different approach. Why put solar only on the roof when a building also has façades, balconies, skylights and canopies? With BIPV solar panels, SpolarPV brings solar generation into the building itself. This means solar can be considered as part of the building design, rather than only as something added after the building is finished.   Solar Is Growing Beyond the Roof Traditional solar is often associated with rooftops. But buildings have more surfaces than the roof. Façades, balconies, skylights and canopies can also be considered when planning a solar project. For architects and developers, this opens up more ways to combine building design and solar power.   SpolarPV BIPV solar panels offer a different option. A BIPV module for commercial applications can be used to bring solar generation into both roofs and architectural surfaces. This makes BIPV different from simply placing standard panels on an existing building. For new construction and renovation projects, SpolarPV BIPV solutions give project teams another way to think about where solar can go.   The question is no longer only “Where can we install solar?” It can also be: “Which parts of the building can become part of the solar system?”   What About Commercial Buildings? Commercial buildings can have large roof and façade areas, but not every project has unlimited space for conventional rooftop solar. This is where a BIPV module for commercial projects can provide another option. Instead of looking only at the roof, developers can consider different parts of the building during the design stage. A BIPV module for commercial applications can be considered for roofs and architectural surfaces where solar generation needs to work together with the building design. For commercial property owners and developers, this means the building itself can become part of the solar strategy. And for architects, it means solar does not always have to look like an extra piece added to the building.   Where Can SpolarPV BIPV Be Used? SpolarPV BIPV can be considered across different parts of a building, depending on the project design: A BIPV solar panel can bring solar generation into architectural surfaces. A BIPV facade panel can make the façade part of the solar solution. A BIPV module for commercial projects can give developers another way to use available building space.   And a rooftop BIPV solar module can bring solar into the roof design from the start. So the opportunity is not only about installing more solar panels. It is also about thinking differently about where solar can be used.   SpolarPV provides BIPV solar solutions for different building applications. Our BIPV solar panels can help turn building surfaces into energy-producing parts of the project. Instead of only looking at the roof, architects and developers can explore more possibilities across the building. For new construction and renovation projects, this can create more opportunities to generate electricity while keeping the overall building design in mind. As more buildings look for ways to use solar, BIPV gives architects and developers another option to consider during building design. Looking for a BIPV solution for your next project?
